Suez Canal Oil Spill: How the Shindora Fish Farms Claim Was Won

In September 2006, an oil tanker incident in the Suez Canal caused a major spill stretching from Kabrit to Shindora, damaging free fishing grounds and fish farms that the local community depended on for its livelihood.

The Shindora Fish Farming Cooperative, representing a large number of affected fish farmers, faced a practical problem common to pollution incidents of this kind: the damage was shared across many members, but the claim needed to be pursued as one coordinated case rather than dozens of individual disputes.

Soliman Advocates represented the cooperative in pursuing compensation for the resulting damage, coordinating throughout with the General Authority for Fish Wealth Development — the body responsible for assessing and supporting the affected fisheries sector.

That coordination mattered on two levels: technically, in documenting and valuing the damage to the fish farms in a form the compensation process could act on, and practically, in keeping a large group of affected farmers represented as a single, organized claimant rather than a fragmented one.

The claim was ultimately successful. Compensation was obtained and distributed to the cooperative’s members — a result that, at the time, helped establish that fishermen and fish farms suffering direct economic loss from a marine pollution incident have a real avenue for compensation in Egypt, separate from the general environmental-damage claims pursued by public authorities.
