Defending a Shipowner Against Marine Pollution Claims in Egypt

When a vessel is connected with a pollution incident in Egyptian waters, the shipowner’s exposure does not arrive on a single track. Port and environmental authorities can act first — detaining the vessel and opening a regulatory investigation — before any civil claim from an affected party is even filed.

In one recent matter, a shipowner faced marine pollution claims following an incident in Egyptian waters, with exposure running on both fronts: potential regulatory action from the competent authorities, and third-party civil liability from parties claiming to have suffered loss.
