Your Container Arrived Damaged. What Should You Do Immediately?

If the cargo is damaged when the container arrives, do not start negotiating the claim before documenting the condition.
Immediately:
- Photograph the container, cargo, and seals.
- Record the container and seal numbers.
- Document the condition of the packages.
- Arrange a survey where appropriate.
- Notify the carrier or its agent in writing.
Most importantly, check the applicable notice and claim deadlines immediately.
Taking delivery does not necessarily mean waiving your rights, but the way the cargo is received and documented can affect the strength of your claim.
